I’d also be happy with this new book: Build a Better Vegetable Garden – 30 DIY Projects to Improve your Harvest.
Written by Joyce and Ben Russell, this would make a great stocking filler for any vegetable grower.
It isn’t really a growing guide (you probably have dozens of those already) but more of a DIY manual for gardeners. It’s full of innovative ideas and practical projects for kitting out your plot with all sorts of home-made constructions from compost bins, to slug-repellent planters, raised beds, fruit cages and even a drying cabinet.
All the projects have a difficulty rating and an estimation of how long they take to make. There’s also a helpful list of tools, in case, like me you don’t know your mitre box from your bradawl. (Don’t worry some of the projects involve little more than a hammer and some wood.)
I’ve already made one of the projects – a leafmould container (to be honest, unhusband did most of it but only because I was busy planting new fruit canes.) But I’ve already half-filled it with leaves, which means it’s time for a mince pie or two.
I reckon this book would be welcome in any gardener’s stocking this year. Or just buy it for yourself. (I’d still like a polytunnel though.)
